The Rockford Amateur Radio Association has been serving the amateur radio community since 1955 — that’s over 70 years of connecting hams across the Rockford area. Whether you’re studying for your first license, setting up your first station, or getting back on the air after time away — RARA is here to help. We believe the best way to grow amateur radio is one conversation at a time.

On the Air
Our repeaters on 146.610 and 147.000 MHz are a great place to make your first contacts. You’ll find friendly operators on the air every day, along with several weekly nets where you can practice and connect with other hams. Looking to get your license? Visit our Get Licensed page for study resources and links to find exam sessions in the area.

Monthly Meetings
RARA hosts monthly meetings featuring guest speakers and programs covering topics from getting started in amateur radio and antenna design to satellite contacts and new technologies — giving members opportunities to both learn and share their knowledge. Meetings are held on the second Friday of each month at OSF Saint Anthony Medical Center in Rockford. A social gathering follows each in-person meeting at Gerry’s Pizza. Winter meetings (January through March) are held virtually via Google Meet. Visitors and prospective members are always welcome.

The Ham Rag
Our club newsletter, The Ham Rag, is published monthly and articles are welcome from all members. The archives date back to the 1970s — a testament to the dedication of our members over the years.

Affiliations and Collaborations
RARA is an ARRL-affiliated club and a member of the Illinois Repeater Association. RARA has strong collaborations with Stateline Amateur Radio Services and the Greater Beloit Amateur Radio Club. We believe that the spirit of amateur radio thrives when we work together – joining forces with like-minded organizations to share knowledge, foster innovation and keep the airwaves alive with purpose.
